1st I want to say that the shipping was lightning fast and the packaging was top notch. The hammer itself is the best self defense product that I have purchased ever. The quality is simply out of this world. I can see myself Reaching for this hammer when in need and being able to absolutely overwhelm my opponent. If I were you and I didn't Own one of these hammers I would pick up the phone right now Or go online and buy one right now you can't beat the price and you can't beat someone else you has 1 when you don't. Hammer time!!

This is a great tomahawk. It is balanced and throws very well. BUT the sheath needed some work so the point did not come thru and stab your arm. I had some rivets installed.

Jun 23, 2019

After a lot of use I brought this to my local Gander outdoors. After sharpening the guy told me it was the sharpest blade he’s ever made in 16 years. He then stated United Cutlery is in his eyes the real deal and never thought of them that way. I’ve beat this this thing camping over the past few years and after a sharpen it performance is legendary. A++++++++

The residential are I live in was recently hit with heavy snow and a tree fell in front of my house, blocking my driveway and the street beyond. The road crew was unwilling to help me clear my driveway and I was left to my own devices. The M48 tactical tomahawk was the only tool I had for such a problem... And it passed with flying colors!! In less than half an hour, I was able to reduce the tree to manageable pieces. Which says a lot about the quality of its craftsmanship. Simply put - M48 gets the job done. I couldn't recommend them more.
Aug 11, 2018

This item is one of my personal favorite items I ordered from this website. I highly recommend this item to anyone.
Jan 14, 2017

bought this and sharpened it to shaving and its now one of my favorite hawks. i havent thrown it because i want it to be a defensive tool but i think it would be balanced enough for it if needed worth every penny in my opinion
Dec 02, 2016

I bought one a few years ago, and it works and handles as I'd hoped. Great tool and awesome defensive weapon if need be. I have also bought a couple of other brands like a sog, but the m48 is my favorite.
Feb 25, 2016

I've had the m48 for over a year now and i take it with me camping for fun. The only complaint I really have about it is the sheath is poorly made. So far I've had three rivets pop out of it and two of the buttons no longer clasp all within the first month or so of use. I no longer keep it on my belt but instead in my ruck. I dont feel as badass without it on my side but it kept falling out or the blade would stick out just enough to scratch my hand when bushing by it. 10/10 would buy again but dont expect much of the sheath.

I've had my M48 about two years and as far as chopping works great. thrown once in a while. Looks greaton video but this isn't really a throwing Hawk. If you want to throw it pick soft trees such as pine. Throw it at Hickory or an old Oak the out come is a broken handle. If you're into throwing there are Hawks made especially for that purpose with wooden handles so they can be easily replaced. Use the M48 properly it'll hold up and do the job. Such as putting holes in a 55 gallon steel barrel to make a burn barrel. When I feel like throwing a Hawk I have one made for that purpose. If the handle breaks I can just pick up another handle at the Hardware store. Every tool has it's purpose and the M48's isn't for throwing. But makes a great camp axe.
Sep 28, 2015

I've had mine for awhile. About two months ago I decided to make a burn barrel out of a heavy gauge steel 55 gallon drum. I put over a hundred holes in that steel barrel. And the spike was still very sharp with out any signs of wear. It's keeps guard beside my bed.
Sep 26, 2015

I've had this for a long time and I love it! It's sharp and the handle has a good feel to it. I've used and it and have never had any issues with it. Some people are complaining that it breaks after throwing it at dead trees, but they don't realize that these weren't made for dead trees. I definitely recommend this.
Aug 20, 2015

Tomahawk was great while it lasted. Threw it a few hours and the handle snapped off on impact. Was throwing at a dead oak stump. Fun for a little while. For the price I would say it's an okay buy.on a scale 1-10 I give it a 4

this hand axe is nice tool for camping, hiking and im not going to lie it is fun to play with responsibly. Grate weight and balance a nice sharp point at the end and the axe blade is just sharp enough all in all this is a good hand axe
Mar 16, 2015

Sorry for the delay but I had to wait until the snow to drop its been very deep, I did get out to check this axe out worked very well I was very impressed with it but I felt that I needed to get a better grip on it so I grabbed some stick on skate board tape and what a difference I had more control with this axe I have a winner with this one. Thanks Mike
Jan 29, 2015

Love it, grand tomahawk. You might want to upgrade the sheath eventually for carry purposes. No complaints though, you should buy two. Check it out yourself!!
Jan 14, 2015

came very sharp and it is well built! the spike is not very sharp but with a little work it is an easy job to sharpen it up. this item was deffently added to my zombie weapon collection.
Jan 08, 2015

when I learned that some of our Special Forces units carry these in Afghanistan I had to have one. Edged weapons are highly respected there. This weapon is serious and can do a lot of damage. I do not recommend repeated throws and I do suggest that you wrap cloth hockey stick tape around the handle. A great value for the money and collector!
If somethins pokin your thigh, its this guy!! The sheath is my only problem with it, besides the fact this is also made in china. ive had two of these for several months, theyve handled the abuse that gard work brings, even with a compsite handle. Like I said though, it pokes you from the bottom side of the sheath, its weight makes the bottom point of the beard expose itself, making running a bad idea if this is on your hip, you may also want to tighten the snaps on the sheath, or it can come free, while walking. Serious hazard considering these things are very sharp out of the package. Love it! Also throwing this tomahawk is both easy and fun, great balance.
Oct 26, 2014

This a very attractive and well designed tomahawk. It is not designed to be a fire axe, nor is it intended to be used to cut firewood. It is a weapon plain and simple. The blade is ample and sharp. The spike is as impressive as it is sharp. I'm not sure that it is as durable as an SOG tomahawk, but I like the design. The SOG Voodo Hawk is still my favorite. The M48 tactical tomahawk is beautiful. It gives the SOG tomahawks some real competition in the beauty category.
Oct 24, 2014

Let's start off by saying this thing is sharp. REALLY sharp, My brother and I both accidentally nicked ourselves with the bottom of the blade, the sheath seems decently durable so far.
Sep 24, 2014

This is well made for fighting or light use, not for throwing or chopping down a forest, if it breaks while using it wrong and hitting it as hard as you can against things then yeah it might break but I would not give a bad review because i dont know how to use something properly
Sep 17, 2014

Awesome out of the box. Sharp and ready to go. Great balance. Good for camp chores like splitting kindling. I'm not a thrower. Don't believe in throwing a perfectly good hatchet to arm the enemy. Great potential for chopping, punching through doors, and self-defense. It's the right weight and length for self-defense purposes. A great bug out bag item.
Sep 09, 2014

i had been looking at this to add to my collection for a while and finally had the money to do so. The tomahawk itself is great and built very well, when thrown the holes in the head make a whistling sound which i found really cool. the sheath however isn't built for a solid combat situation, the snaps are too sticky to be open and retrieve the weapon quickly and smoothly, definitely dont like that it opens underneath, a top closure of some sort would have been better, im having a custom leather sheath made.......but it is a great weapon and i am happy i got it and i am thinking of getting another down the line
Aug 08, 2014

I get a kick out of a lot of people’s reviews. It snapped on me. I buy the same products and I do not snap them. Let me explain something to you. It does not matter what knife you buy or what axe you buy, after long term use or even short term use with a lot of throws or chops eventually the product will break. Nothing is indestructible especially for a cheap price. I personally own this axe and love it. I take it out here and there and throw it. I’m sure after 500 throws ill eventually break it. Lol. Nothing last forever. Unless they make the product out of the same stuff they make rocket ships that go to outer space it will one day break, lol. Get over it. Over all this is a great toy for the price. Don’t listen to ignorance.
Jul 12, 2014

I have thrown a lot of Axes, and tomahawks. (okay maybe not a lot to some professional standards) I would strongly recommend this tomahawk to anyone looking for a work axe, and or a (DEFINITE) thrower. It is made of really strong material, I have had Four that are used ALOT and have received their share of abuse, and not one of them has broken (fingers crossed that I didnt just jinx it) I cant tell you how many wooden handles I haver had to replace, I would chose one of these over a wood handle 9 times out of 10.. A really smart buy.
Jul 10, 2014

This is a beautiful weapon. The blade was sharp right out of the box, and the sheath fits like a glove. I bought this axe about two years ago, and it's taken a lot of abuse. I still use it! This thing works great if you learn how to use it. Balanced well for throwing, feels strong but lightweight in your hand. Slightly shorter than what I'm used to. I was very happy withh my purchase and I'm still happy!
Jun 13, 2014

I just got my Hawk and I have to say I am very impressed. First thing I took it out of the box and threw it at a tree. It didn't break and it stuck. After several more throw and I mean I threw it as hard as I could no damage what so ever to the head or the handle. I can't wait to take this camping. Get it you will not be disappointed.
Jun 11, 2014

Sharp as a razor. Light but heavy duty. This is a high quality, solidly built defensive weapon. the M48 Tactical Tomahawk is even more than I expected. It would be a great value at twice the price. May not be made to chop petrified wood. However, I don't plan to use it for that. This tool is a pure combat weapon.
May 11, 2014

Apr 28, 2014

I bout this tomahawk because I've always wanted one and i have to say i lived up to my expectations 100%. I have put this thing through every single thing i could think of and it still hasn't broke like some other reviews said. Ive thrown it thousands of times, smashed hundreds of cinder blocks and i use it for almost every thing its just all around a good tool. I recommend this thing to everyone.
Mar 09, 2014

Down right amazing. Sharp, deadly, and effective!!! Great for any survival or camping need. Don't hesitate to purchase.
Feb 08, 2014

I loved it so much I got it for Christmas since its winter it doesn't stick with the axe blade but the pick works fine i am really in to throwing so i got a cool picture of all 7 throwing knives and my tomahawk together
Dec 16, 2013

this is a very awesome tool to have i use it every time i go out camping or in the woods, and if you put your back to it you can chop anything down, and i have actually tried sticking through metal and it went through it like butter.
Dec 09, 2013

This Tomahawk Is Brilliant, Great Price, Great Weight, Sharp, Every Thing You Can THINK OF! BUY THIS TOMAHAWK NOW!!
Dec 04, 2013

I bought 2 of these and both arrived in perfect condition. The heads are quite sturdy. I might have to wrap the handle though. It seems a bit slippery. The ax has a good edge but the back of the spike is not ground to an edge. It is about 1/8" thick instead of having a knife's edge. Overall I am quite pleased with the tomahawk. Shipping was quite fast as well. But, no tracking number was given.
Dec 01, 2013

This tomahawk is the best I've seen. It's durability is unmatched, and throws like a champ. I've already used it for a variety of tasks and not a mark on it, and on top of that, it is capable of being almost razor sharp. The only problem is the edge doesn't hold a razor edge for very long, but otherwise this thing is awesome. Get yourself one of these tomahawks!
Nov 27, 2013

I rate this 5+++!!! This tomahawk is amazing!! This is an easy to buy tomahawk and the price is cheap! I didn't get this tomahawk from budk though, I got it at a local store only because it was 4$ Cheaper. I've thrown it too and it's an excellent thrower! I encourage everyone who can afford this hawk ( which about everybody can) to buy it immediately !
Nov 23, 2013

I got this to scare off vandals from my property & it works well, too. I've also cut myself up pretty well over the years sharpening this thing, and will probably loose a limb. I play with this thing way too often not to have some injury result from it, and I just remember that horrible chapter in "Where The Red Fern Grows" where that kid spills his guts on a double bit axe cause he's running through the woods & trips onto it. I'm going to be tossing this around one day, and will drop it on my toe, and then no more toe. Overall, if you want something with the capability to dismember limbs & split skulls, this will do it. It is not a freakin toy, at all. Great piece for trading with native Americans, building log cabins, farming corn, and establishing settlement. It has a rich military history as well, actually being part of the French militia uniform at one time. I recommend an axe frog, over this pos sheath it came in, for any belt use. The sheath's good part is that the struggle you put into removing the tomahawk from it, is actually a safety feature. If you keep on the sheath, you will keep your fingers/toes. Remove the POS sheath, and welcome to my world where you cut yourself up on it on a regular basis. It's a very useful garage tool, for splitting small logs, or tree limbs. Can't say I breeched a door with it yet, nor plan to, but useful information to know for the future. Devastating spike will land you in jail no matter how you use it, if you use it on a human..
Nov 13, 2013

I've had this tomahawk for about two years now. I have thrown it into trees, hacked massive amounts of wood with it on numerous camping trips and it's still sharp as h**l. The weight is perfect, it's balanced perfect, and well worth the $40. Highly recommend. Probably the best $40 I've ever spent on any tool/weapon.
Nov 12, 2013

got it for Christmas last year and I couldn't wait to open it, it is very well built and very sharp. I've had it for almost a year and have had no complaints. This tomahawk is probably the best and most durable knife I have in my collection of knives
Oct 31, 2013

This is great for work, play, or for protection. This hawk is very durable and comes right out of the box with a surprisingly sharp edge.
Oct 11, 2013

This thing is a beast and will take any abuse you give it. I have been throwing this for about two years now and it hasn't showed any signs of giving up. This tomahawk rocks!
Sep 29, 2013

Originally saw this 'hawk on a History Channel show about the history of blades. Watched a guy use one to open a car roof like a can opener. I have nothing to complain about this 'hawk, worth every penny.
Sep 27, 2013

I’ve been a tomahawk collector for years, and I’ve been throwing for a long time as well. I’ve run across some really bad quality hawks. Finally I came across this hawk, and I was blown away! This tomahawk is probably the strongest and most durable in my collection. I tend to break handles out of tomahawks when I throw them a lot, but I have not had any trouble with this one! It sticks very easily, and takes a beating without breaking! The only problem with this hawk is the edge. It tends to dull rather quickly. When you sharpen it again, it will take a very sharp edge! It’s worth every penny! Get it!
Sep 27, 2013

Sep 24, 2013

totally awesome got it and i aw lways exspect things to be bigger then they realy are and this was a tiny bit smaller then i expected, but a true pro me and my friend were out all day throwing and hacking at this huge dead tree, only 2 LITTLE nicks in the blade, point isn't really pointy but still awesome it stuck and in an olk pritty far, and olk is one of the hardist trees there are, all in all its totally boss
Aug 25, 2013

Aug 25, 2013

this tomahawk is the prize of my collection of throwing weapons, i use it for yard work and to just mess around with and not a scratch on it after a month. the m48 products are all great quality and i suggest to buy as many as you can. it needs no sharpening and not a single complaint.
Aug 19, 2013

I was very impressed with the performance of the M48 Tactical Tomahawk from United Cutlery. It held up to all my tests and remains as sharp as ever. From the moment I pulled it out of the box it was very formidable as a self defense weapon. However, this tomahawk is not just limited to self defense; it can be used for almost any kind of tough work in and around the home. I would certainly recommend this to anyone looking for a nice durable tomahawk.
Aug 12, 2013

Unique. I ordered hawk from a different site. No difference n price. This thing is legit, very sturdy, the only drawback 4 me was wanting the handle 2 b a lil thicker & a lil longer. Reason being my dominant ARM was injured sum years ago. But very dependable.
Aug 10, 2013

I've gotta admit this axe is durable I've hit some things thinking I damaged the blade and to my suprise not a scratch but the bolts could be better quality besides that its a solid tool and I love it ! 5 stars !
Aug 05, 2013

I received this tomahawk and was completely please by how sharp it was . I took it out for some field use and it performed flawlessly! Great axe!
Aug 03, 2013

This is a truly amazing weapon and tool. I got mine at a gun show here in Tampa a while back, and I am very satisfied. It is very light weight, but still with the proper heft to the head that you want from a tomahawk. It is still in near mint condition, despite the rigors I have put it through. It makes a great multipurpose tool for camping and hunting. The sheath it comes with is great, however I would recommend getting a tactical scabbard for it, so that you can keep it on your person and readily accessible at the same time.
Jul 25, 2013

D**n....is all I can say! I've ordered several hawks from Bud K and other places and I have to say this one has the meanest rear point. I like how it's rated for throwing, chopping, and a can opener (haha)! My favorite handle is used as well. I'm not a big fan of cord wrapping everything.
Jul 25, 2013

This is not a toy, it's a fully functional & almost indestructible tool. Whether you need it for breaching of CQQ in a war zone or a wilderness survival tool. This tomahawk fills every need. If you want to support troops forget the bumper sticker and send a soldier or civilian contractor one of these. It saved my life on 4 continents.
Jul 19, 2013

This axe is really nice. I chopped down the box it came in. I also threw it a couple of times and it stuck on the wooden plank really well. Overall a really good buy, and it was on sale at the time I bought it so thanks Trueswords!
Jul 17, 2013

This is by far, one of the best, if not the best; items available in the entire catalog. BUY THIS ITEM NOW!!!!!
Jul 17, 2013

I studied the specs carfully before I made my purchase. Unfortunately I didn't get them from BudK as I may have saved about 20 bucks but when I got mine I checked what I extimated to be the greatest strengths of these items. First and crutial to it's design is the center of gravity rests just about less then 1/2 an inch abot the handle crest. This along with the total length top to bottom gives you a very cost effective balance when throwning them into tight accurate spin velocities with a greater striking force than any fiberglass handle design. The quality of the steel used in production holds an edge for any survival or tactical task needed but can be sharpend far easier than cermanic edges. The sheaths are heavy guage high strength nylon for a secure safety feature when your not using it. I've owned mine for about a year now and with the advanced sharp edge design with the overall design I consider them to hold a top 2% value of any other combat\survival weapon in my collection and trust me I've put them to the test chopping firewood and using the pick end to dig out rocks off hillsides for campfire stones and have yet to chip or bend either the sharpened edges or pickaxe end to put them out of use. It's another reason why I've continued to buy sets of United Cutlery tools instead of just one, never hurts to have a back that you can count on. Whether it's a Machete, tomahawk, personal knife or short sword, United Cutlery has become a Name within it's own brand of quality and standards even the military or just the adventurer has come to rely on and BudK help to provide.
Jul 04, 2013

I got this piece for home protection . The M48 t-hawk is of top notch construction ! Let me warn U kiddies this is no toy ! This t-hawk is serious business .
Jun 26, 2013

If you're not sure if this is the tomahawk for you, IT IS!!! This would be a great addition to any camp gear and especially a Bug Out Bab. Very rugged and durable and glad I ordered one. Another great product at BudK.
Jun 12, 2013

What a fantastic product. Best camping accessory I have added to my inventory yet. If thrown correctly it is the best polymer hawk I have had the privilege of throwing. I find it more useful firmly gripped in the hand than flying in the air though. Very solid construction. Good steel, stays sharp. Strikes fear into the hearts of brush and fire wood.
Jun 07, 2013

this thing is amazing. my dad bought one of these and i have wanted one ever since i saw it. but however its not really meant to throw because of the fact the head is to thick and the balance point is to far backward to actually throw it that along with the fact if one does it disarms you and arms your adversary. it sharpens rather nicely and takes alot of abuse. truth be told i love it. its an awesome survival weapon.
Jun 05, 2013

This is a steal of a deal. The particular item is NOT A THROWING AXE! It is a last stand/CQB implement and should be used such...and maybe a wood chopper if in a pinch. Good balance and feel in hand, and I would hate to be on the business end of this guy. The only minus is the sheath, it will not outlast the tomahawk.
May 29, 2013

May 29, 2013

A wonderful buy. Most pleased with the sturdy feeling and weight. It is great for many purposes. Truly worth purchasing.
May 18, 2013

This is a great tomahawk to throw. When I threw it, it busted right threw a board. the bad thing about it was it wasn't that sharp out the box.
May 14, 2013

blew my mind once i opened the box! throws great, not to heavy but not to light and very study (if not thrown like an idiot). Though it did break in two i will buy another one soon. It was that awesome.
May 13, 2013

Good quality! Yes it sticks into the tree when you throw it. I would hate to be on the receiving end of this tomahawk.
May 12, 2013

Worth the $35 . I bought 2 of these axes and they are fantastic. They can chop wood (not as great as a hatchet) they have a terrifying whistle when you throw them. The back part isn't a blade but an incredibly pointy pic. The blades came razor sharp.
May 11, 2013

May 10, 2013

It is literally the greatest thing i ever bought off of Budk. I carry it on me when in hunting or camping. It has become an absolute essential to bring.
May 09, 2013

Apr 27, 2013

Apr 18, 2013

Very well made tomahawk. Sharp out of box. Really great for throwing or for working outside. The first one I bought, broke after using it for about a month. Luckily, BudK was very nice and had me ship the broken tomahawk back to them, and they replaced it with a brand new one!
Apr 16, 2013

Apr 16, 2013

This is a phenomenal purchase! I am blown away with the quality of this axe (tomahawk), especially compared to the price. I showed it to my friends the other day, and had them guess based on the feel, and look of the axe, how much they thought it had cost. Both of them agreed on about $100. They freaked when I said $35, and have now checked out Trueswords of their own accord. Everything about this axe screams perfect weapon.
The only knit-picky critique I have is that the handle needs a bit more grip. I solved this fast by twisting, and snake-wrapping some black athletic tape around it, and then wrapping another flat layer of athletic tape over that. Google some lacrosse websites if you don't know what I'm talking about. Lacrosse players use this technique all the time. I also recommend looping some para-chord through the hole at the bottom. That way, if you loop your hand through when wielding the axe, it will greatly minimize the risk of it flying out of your hand. But seriously, perfect perfect weapon.
Apr 13, 2013

I just bought this wonderful piece of hardware. was pretty cool when i finally got to play with it. still had grease on it when i took it out if the box. the back is sharper than the front but sure i can fix that. its a nice size not too heavy but not to light. i would recommend this to anyone who wants a tamohawk. m48 is a very good brand and i hope to keep buying their stuff.
Apr 11, 2013

Great tool. I have used it to chop wood, and even punch holes in a steel barrel. Great weapon, great tool. There is little more one can say about it.
Apr 08, 2013

This is an amazing tomahawk, I love it. It is very sturdy and well make. It also throws great. I highly recommend it.
Apr 04, 2013

I am a former Marine and I put my equipment to the test, in my opinion this is the best survival/ self defense tool on the market and an exelent price as well.
Mar 27, 2013

I love this tomahawk I have bought 7 of them! I give them as gifts to the people around me. I own two and have put one threw the paces. Great buy must have.
Mar 20, 2013

This as all other United Cutlery products I have purchased is an excellent item. Very well made and balanced overall. The first time I threw it it stuck right in. When I had the range dialed in every time it went right in. This is a must have if I'm out in the wild.
Mar 18, 2013

I've used this tomahawk from chopping firewood, to target throwing. It stood up well against the abuse, and only need a little work to resharpen the edge to razor perfection. My only real complaint about this tomahawk is not even about the tomahawk, its about the sheath. The sheath it comes with works well as a house and guard for the blade. However, it offers you little in the way of quick draw access because it gets caught on all the buttons, and in my overall opinion, does not hold it securely. If you can DIY with kydex, this would be an awesome item to carry. I have a few tomahawks, almost all of cold steels line of tomahawks in fact, and this tomahawk ranks right in line with them. The tomahawk as it is is perfect, and offers a little more in splitting ability over cold steel due to its wedged head design.
Mar 16, 2013

This is everything described and I don't think you can beat it fot the money. It's a camping must have. Great combo of tool/weapon. I bought several to give to friends.
Mar 16, 2013

Fantastic! Bought 2 and gave one to a friend who wanted one. As always it came quicker then I anticipated. Already para-cord wrapped the handle and added it to my Survival gear. Don't wait, get one you won't be disappointed.
Mar 09, 2013

This is just one fine piece of metallurgical genius, a sheer delight to hold, even more of a thrill to throw. TOUGH, light, DURABLE, sharp, very balanced, and just an all-around great addition to anyone's gear or tools. Brother, this thing REALLY kicks "axe"...!!
Mar 07, 2013

Awesome! very happy with it. takes a edge nice I like how i can take the head off to sharpen.
Mar 02, 2013

This thing is freakin awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love this thing. It throws well and is very sharp. I took it to a wrecked car and chopped holes in the fenders and knocked out the glass like in the video review and it kept a sharp enough edge to turn around and chop down several small trees without having to sharpen it.
Feb 28, 2013

Nice, quick delivery (ordered on weekend, delivered by Wednesday). Very solid feel to it, despite the head being relatively dull. But, hey, it's a tomahawk right? One side will crack an walnut and the spike will open a beer can. :o)
Feb 25, 2013

This tomahawk is awesome, a little smaller than I thought, but it is well built, the head has a good weight to do what is needed. But I know not to throw it like in the video, thats how people are breaking theirs. But again awesome at it's best.
Feb 25, 2013

I'm the type of person that puts whatever i purchase to the test. To my big surprise, the good ratings on this weapon were correct: the M48 Hawk is beyond impressive by my standards. My brothers and I spent hours testing out this bad boy and at the end of the day the Hawk (aside from a few light scratches)was completely intact! We used it on wood, boards, oil drums, door knobs, cinder blocks, bricks, trees, anything we could think of. On a throw test, the spike even accidentally pierced our fence post, which is steel! After really exhausting ourselves through the day of using the M48 Hawk, I concluded that this is one of the best survival tools i have ever purchased and will again purchase another! Excellent weapon; so looking forward to any future M48 Kommando gear that is produced!
Feb 20, 2013

I have now purchased 4 of these M48 Tomahawks. Two as gifts, one to my father and, at her begging request, 1 for my thirteen year old daughter and then 2 for myself. I broke the first one but only after considerable and even irresponsible abuse. My 2 teenagers and I had been throwing it for at least 4 months, nearly daily. The handle and blade held up amazingly well to the fact we were beginners and had no clue what we doing. This Tomahawk took out 3 sheets of 1/2 inch thick ply wood. With every successful throw that spike sent chunks of ply wood flying off the back. It reminded me of a hollow point bullet, small entrance hole, Huge exit hole! So, eventually I come across a 4 foot long, 1 x 1 ft thick beam along with 3, 2 ft long 1 x 1/2 foot planks. I place 4 foot beam in front of a tree and stack the 3 planks on top of beam, laying long ways on the ground. I'm throwing by myself, having a blast. I've grown so accustomed to the M48's durability that I was just being careless. The handle kept wacking hard against the top edge of the 4 ft beam, a 90 degree angle mind you, and the Tomahawk handle kept striking that edge at a near 45 degrees. So I'm an idiot and eventually the handle snapped at about 3-4 inches from the neck, right where the heads insertion pieces stopped. I will be more mindful with the new one. And just remember everything has it's limits. I tried the SOG Vietnam styled Tomahawk in between and it is a great throwing Tomahawk. Every bit as sharp and durable as the M48, no dought! However, the spikes are dramatically different. The Vietnamese style is better from the sense of having a tool in the spike portion, good for prying or etching. But, from a throwing stand point that spike on the M48 is just Ridiculous! If you throw it at about 8-9 paces from your target, prepared to be slightly aroused by the 'thunk' sound it makes as it sticks in just about anything you could throw it at. Just not at eachother, please.
Feb 19, 2013

This is slung on my day to day pack for hiking, hunting, horseback riding, and camping. This beast of a tomahawk/hatchet can withstand almost anything Ive thrown at it, from prying open an old ammo box, to cleaving through 4 inch thick trunks of trees. With proper care you can get a razors edge on both sides making it a great tool and "home defense" weapon. With a proper weight and a nice heft the axe side can split a melon with little to no effort, and with a incredibly sharp pick on the opposite side with the capability of penetrating and old Buick car door to the shaft like it was tissue paper you can guarantee it'll send Mr Burglar back out the window he came. As for utility the axe head is hefty and well proportioned for throwing and even light work, though im sure a determined individual could take down a small tree with this beast, and the person would wear out long before the axe did. The axe head and pick both hold an edge pretty well and only need sharpening after a few days of hard work. The handle itself is incredibly sturdy and weather proof even in the beating sun with the axe head secured properly to it. After plenty of use the axe head doesn't wiggle or wobble after use. Though i do suggest grabbing some 550 cord and wrapping the handle to extend its lifespan, and so it wont slip out of your paw when it gets wet or sweaty. In all honesty there is really no downside to this product. The price is reasonable, especially for the high quality its created with. 5 outta 5 for me.
Feb 18, 2013

This axe is WICKED! If a person is not carefull they can hurt themselves. It`s just mean. To me the axe head could be a bit bigger but what has sure works. A person needs a back up weapon like this, after the stupid gun laws they rushed to pass here in Colorado, a person needs a backup, you will not be disapointed.
Feb 14, 2013

The M48 is the perfect weapon,it is perfect close combat as well as survival.of all the great products which i have bought from budk this is by far the most impressive. The M48 is 100% lethal whether held or thrown and as far as I can tell indestructable and believe me i have tried over the last year and a half. Its a monster and will probably be issued to soldiers eventually in the future. Can't say enough get one.
Feb 07, 2013

It came, I saw, It destroyed. I purchased this tomahawk with the intent to give it to my wife as a pack axe. I am now going to have to buy my wife a different pack axe. The M48 hawk is light, well built, well balanced, and destructive. The YouTube videos do not do this beast justice. On the down side it was a tad smaller than i expected, but not enough to effect its rating.
Feb 01, 2013

To me the M48 Hawk is a work of art. A sculpture in stainless that has ilicited ooooo's and ahhhh's from all my friends. Every time I show it my audience takes at least one step back. Frighteningly enchanting, I dare anyone to try and get past it.
Jan 27, 2013

I LOVE IT. It was defiantly worth the forty bucks. I have had this for half a year now and have torture tested this thing to no end. The blade came sharp and ready right out of the box. Like I said I have tested it in every way I can and it doesn't have a nick on the blade. I even use the spike to break rocks. An epic buy. THANKS A TON BUDK.
Jan 21, 2013

one of my best friends has the m48 throwing axe and i must say its the best i have ever seen im thinking about getting me one its really easy to throw anyone can do it it chopes though a 5 inch sapling with easy its a must have so if you dont have one get one now you wont regret it i promise.
Jan 21, 2013

throws great solid handle the sheath could be better but its great for the money all in all its a great ax for a bugout bag or just camping or messing around with.
Jan 17, 2013

I tried to order this item from a different website, hoping to save a few bucks. The item never came and I was very upset, luckily I got refunded. I decided I would be smart and rely on BudK like I usually do, and they did not disappoint. My tomahawk came in a few days. Its much stronger than I expected, and so far I have no complaints. I have used it to chop up logs and I've thrown it at targets, It is still strong, and has kept its edge. As of now I recommend this to anyone who wants a strong, great looking and functional tomahawk. I wouldn't abuse the thing, but lets hope it stays strong for years to come.
Jan 17, 2013

This is an awesome tomahawk. It comes with a great edge and a good point. It cuts trees very easily and is more than worth 35 dollars.
Jan 17, 2013

Awesome Tactical Tomahawk!!! Great price and craftmanship. The spike head of the Tomahawk is fierce and the ax head of the weapon actually works very well when chopping down small trees and brush. (A MUST HAVE)
Jan 01, 2013

I am heavy into hand to hand weapons, comes with the job as being a Marine I guess. I saw this producted and wanted to test its durability. Out of the box the weight feels like it was made just for me. Good ballance, got it to stick 95% of the time. The weight is put in the right areas and makes it an effective hand to hand weapon. This is going in my armory with my other hand to hand weapons. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in throwing, camping, or any good old fashion hand to hand weapon.
Dec 26, 2012

Outstanding! The sheath is not the best, but the tool makes up for it. If your an outdoorsman, this is for you.
Dec 26, 2012

I just got it yesterday and it is amazing. I took it out of the box and walked outside and threw it and it stuck right into the stump. I recommend this for anyone who likes tomahawks.
Dec 18, 2012

Dec 15, 2012

This tomahawk came in the mail yesterday, and it exceeded my expectations. It was heavier than I expected, but that's good, because you can simply tell how solid the handle is. The axe head is razor sharp, it feels great, and it looks great. My only complaint is that the spike is not as sharp as it could be. It can go through wood okay, but a little sharpening will make it fully puncture anything this thing goes through. I haven't tried throwing it, yet.
Dec 13, 2012

This thing is a beast and it looks cool. I'm adding this bad boy to my bug out bag. This would make an excellent zombie slaying weapon!
Dec 12, 2012

Dec 09, 2012

I would have to say this is hands down one of the best items I've purchased on this site. For the price I was expecting the quality to be average at best but this Tomahawk has impressed me more and more everytime I use it. It's very well balanced for throwing and sticks to it's targets very well as long as you know what you're doing. It's also impressively durable, I tested it out in harsh conditions for expected situations and it is still all in one solid piece just like It's straight out of the box. As for the sharpness obviously it's a combat tomahawk so it's not meant to be used specifically for cutting thick amounts of wood so yeah if you try using it to cut some logs it's going to take a few swings but it's gonna do the job and there is no question it will tear apart whoever you intend to be on the receiving end of this (ex. Dangerous wild animals) as long as you're experienced in knowing how to actually use a tomahawk in combat. I'm planning on purchasing a second one now that I know first hand how reliable it can be. Highly suggest this weapon to anyone.
Dec 09, 2012

Just got my M48 today and it's awesome! Took it out of the box and into the backyard immediately started chopping and puncturing stuff. Sure, it can chop wood okay but this thing is really designed to be a weapon and it suits that purpose well. It balances well and feels good in your hands. Yeah, perfect for up close Zombie killing action!!! It will go where I go from now on.
Dec 08, 2012

Great for chopping wood and stabbing tires, good for breaking rocks. Sheath isn't the best, and it doesn't come sharpened but it's a great tomahawk! BUY IT!!!!!!
Dec 02, 2012

Gave it to a friend as a birthday present. He had the thing for 10 minutes when he slit his wrist wide open on accident. He barely nicked himself on the beard and got 15 stitches. Goes to show you the cutting potential of this Tomahawk. Definitely worth the price and the medical bill. I recommend this to anyone looking to do anything from splitting wood to splitting heads.
Nov 23, 2012

This is the second one of these I own, and my opinion is still the same! Amazing! The reason Im giving another review is because, now that I have two, Ive found out that I can climb any tree around by just using the spike on these things like ice axes!! haha! Don't advise unexperienced climbers to try that one, but I weigh 260 lbs and Im 6'4" and these guys can hold me mid air when stuck in a tree! If that doesnt prove how quality a product this is, i dont know what could!
Oct 24, 2012

I bought this axe a week or two ago and i am so impressed. Right out of the box it is super sharp. The Point on the spear is door piercing as well as eye piercing goodness. I love it i took it out a couple nights after i got it and put it to the test. It splits wood like a pro, and i hit a old kitchen chair i had with it 2 times and on the second one it cracked the base in half. The only down side is I hit a screw on the chair and put a little nick in my blade, however it has still held up fine. I just took it out in the rain, got it all dirty and threw it and no problems whatsoever. Everything is still intact and tight like the day i pulled it out of the box. If your thinking about buying one of these things, stop thinking and BUY IT NOW!!! Great for my Bug out Bag and will be a wonderful camping axe when i get the chance. Thanks BUD K!
Oct 19, 2012

Got mine a few weeks ago and I LOVE IT!! This is definitely going in my bug-out kit, and will soon be joined by more blades from BudK. I absolutely Love this Hawk and highly recommend it to anyone putting together a bug-out kit for whatever purpose, whether it is for zombie apocalypse, hurricane, or just general camping/wilderness survival.

Oct 04, 2012

Wow!!! Just speechless great tool for work and protection..was not very sharp out of the box but that was an easy fix!!This is a well made axe i highly recommed to any one who i looking for a durable long lasting axe that will last longer than you!!! I a extremely happy with these being my first purchase @ budk.com!!! Thank you budk you have a new customer for life!!!
Sep 26, 2012

Hello i received my M48 a few weeks ago,it is awesome, if you want to keep the handle cord for grip(that you will) take it off before even using it and use something like GOOP glue to re wrap it. It will come rite of if you don't. It is incredible to throw ,I choose to hit the target spike fist,it has wicked penetration.I had some old oak doors as targets out back, which i turned to kindling.this is the most important flaw is the blade side facing down to your hand. i slipped with my grip before throwing ,just barely and the point poked my the top of my throwing hand.it hit my vein blood started squirting out 2 ft. no joke. i still love the M48 and read and watched about the danger of the bottom of the blade so i knew better.the curved blade and points make it sweet to look at and throw chop and grapple with you just need to learn how to handle it. i give it five stars. ps the sheath is only good for transport not wearing on your belt, you could disembowel yourself. regard, Jeremy Barnett.
Sep 26, 2012

this m48 is bad a** i'm a good 200 pounds and when put the spike end into a tree i could do pull ups with it i also think when i get the money i will buy another one.
Aug 16, 2012

This is an amazing buy. I recommend this axe to anyone. It's very sharp with a sharp spike and edge. The spike and hatchet part stay sharp unless your like my brother and hit barrels with it. And the spike does go through metal barrels with ease. Worth the 40$.
Aug 12, 2012

Absolutely loved it. I'm more into throwing knives but I threw this and if it hits it sticks.
Aug 04, 2012

This is very sturdy. It would be incredibly effective in any circumstance where close quarters combat is necessary. The price is most reasonable considering the quality.
Aug 04, 2012

The M48 is my favorite piece in my quickly growing collection. This thing, out of the box, is ready to work. Can't imagine there is much it can't get thru. Perfectly weighted and sharp as H***!!! It's nice to know our boys over sees are using it...I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end.
Aug 01, 2012

I got the M48 as a gift. It was razor sharp strait out of the box. Very durable construction. I think it is well worth the price.
Jul 16, 2012

I've had this for a couple weeks now. It works amazingly! It cuts wood, sticks in targets, and is very sturdy. I give it a 5/5, well worth the money!
Jul 15, 2012

i think you guy should make a replica of the assassins creed hidden blade i have been looking for one but they are all over 100$ i was wondering if you could make on thank you in advance
Jul 07, 2012

This tomahawk is definitely worth at least DOUBLE the price, and maybe more. RAZOR sharp first thing out of the box, and will destroy anything you can throw at it. Definitely get this!
Jun 22, 2012

This Tomahawk is awesome! Totally worth more than 40 bucks. This thing will tear through anything. EXTREMELY sharp out of the box. Get this thing!
Jun 12, 2012

This is a badass weapon its sturdy sharp and just has an excellent feel to it. Tested it out and this is a must have if you plan to make use of it.
Jun 12, 2012

This M48 Tomahawk is one of the best, and hardest hitting tomahawks that I have owned. Even my 13yr old son has enjoyed throwing it at my target. It is very well waited
Jun 08, 2012

This is the best buy I have made on this site. I purchased my hawk a year ago and use it for throwing, camping, and hiking and it's still very sharp. This thing destroys anything and everything. Fallen tree on the trail... No problem. Remove unwanted Mesquite trees... To easy. Had some beers and wanna toss it around with some friends... have at it! The Sheath was crap, which is not that big of a deal, but still it should have been better.
Jun 08, 2012

Being my 4th buy from budk, I knew the m48 was going to be great. And it is. My favorite thing i have ordered from budk so far. It has a very reliable grip, and the blade has not come loose from the handle, (I have had issues with other things I've ordered with their handles coming loose) so i was really happy with this buy. I am having fun chopping and stabbing outside with this tomahawk, (trees, and bottles, not people). So definitely get this.
Jun 05, 2012

May 30, 2012

this tomahawk is AMAZING. let me say first of all there is no hole for the axe head. instead it has three screws that hold it into the 30% fiberglass reinforced blade. the tomahawk blade is fairly sharp and can be brought to a razor sharp edge with ease. overall a EXCELLENT buy for the price. i recommend it to any body that loves tactical weapons and the like.
May 16, 2012

The first time I held this Hawk in my hand, a had a single word enter my thoughts "SAVAGE!" I own several tomahawks, but seem to always snap the handles. Not with this BEAST, I have even used it for cutting bamboo, it sliced thru the limbs with more ease than ANY blade I've used in the past. Should the Zombie Apocalype come, BRING IT DEAD-HEAD, I'm your DADDY! LOL!
Apr 13, 2012

This is the first tomahawk I've ever had so I have nothing to base this off of but I love this tomahawk. I think I will buy a few more. Shipping was fast just 3 business days. Bigger than I thought but not a bad thing. Lighter than I expected too. Didn't come sharp but not a big deal.
Apr 10, 2012

This tomahawk is quite pugnacious and I mean it in a good way. If y'all buy the rats in your house will never disobey you again and will run in scorn. I've never seen a weapon perform with such a demeaning affect toward the intended target. I don't know about ya'll but if I saw someone pointing this ax at me I would obey their every command even if its to pick cotton! I repeat buy this ax it will do ya'll good! Sincerely the master of hog squeals!
Apr 03, 2012

You could do a real number on someone or something with this bad boy. Very strongly made, sharp and handles surprisingly lightly.
Mar 30, 2012

An incredible tool. I've used this hawk for light camp duty, chopping small diameter branches, clearing light brush, etc. I wouldn't use it for splitting logs or nothing, but then again, that's not this hawks purpose. Excellent light duty axe... tremendously vicious and effective self defense weapon. Very easy to throw, wicked sharp, and the wow factor is huge. Sheath was crap, expected that through others reviews. Easy fix with a trip to the leather store. Just my two cents worth.
Mar 23, 2012

AMAZING TOMAHAWK!!!!!!!! Everything I ever wanted out of it! Throws, chops, and destroys everything you want it to! Just amazing!
Mar 14, 2012

Well im no expert on tomahawks, but for 35$ you wouldn't expect much right? well this is a 35$ MONSTER!

a lot of people seem to think that it isnt sharp, but trust me its plenty sharp, you dont want a razor edge on something that is going to be doing high impact chopping. it comes out of the box perfect. its got a nice polymer handle and its balanced well. good for throwing when you practice with it, not to mention an excellent survival, self defense or breaching tool.

it says stainless steel china,
this is probably the 1st GRATE quality thing from china i have ever bought.

i dont think i could break it if i tried.

their are people on youtube wailing on metal with this thing.

I would give a warning though. WARE THICK GLOVES!! if you intend to let the handle slide through in your hand to hold it closer to the head.. in a word the 2 points at the top and bottom of the cutting head are RETARDEDLY sharp, and will EASILY mess up your hand if your not careful. i would just avoid letting it slide altogether.

Bottom line. im happy, i would recommend this item. and im probably going to be back in 7 months for another one for a birthday present.

the shipping was also fast and arrived under expected time.

Thanks trueswords
Mar 13, 2012

When I got it I was amazed at the detail. I put a stone on a log and the tomahawk cut it right in half! When I threw it, it stuck right in the wood.
Mar 04, 2012

Without a doubt one of the best Hawks on the market, the video is right, nearly indestructible. I wasn't a huge tomahawk fan till I bought this hawk. Great Buy.
Feb 28, 2012

I got my tomahawk today this is great tool. I got tired out chopping old pallet in my yard. This tomahawk went though it like was nothing. I will use this tool in my hunting, camping or hard to reach fishing spot I think this is a great buy I love it.
Feb 05, 2012

This a great and fun tool. The first day I got it I went out side and started throwing it, the thing was spot on. I must say I wasn't that accurate in the beginning, but with lots of training and the will to get better I can nail the bulls eye every time. The m48 tactical axe is a great tool to have if you love the outdoors, hunt, and to just take camping. I don't leave the house with out it. This axe takes down quarter sized trees with 1-2 chops; stays sharp and sharpens easy. The only problem with it is that one day I went and used it in the rain the next day there was rust in the corners. Besides that ,great and fantastic axe. You need to buy one today. In fact by 2 and give 1 to your son he will love it.
Feb 01, 2012

Some people were complaining how the handle broke because they were hurling it at dead trees. First off, this is a tomahawk not a throwing axe, STOP throwing it especially at hardwood. If used as a tool, properly that is, it can take a HUGE beating. I've had it for a year now and I take it for every single hunting and camping trip there is. This thing is a monster. It's greatly balanced, not too sharp (so that the edge doesn't chip), and after all this abuse only a little paint came off. Worth the bucks.
Jan 31, 2012

I've never thrown axes until I stumbled upon this one. I was able to throw it with great precision soon after picking it up and with different throw techniques. It's solid, chops like no other, easy to sharpen and easy to throw! It's useful no matter where you go.
Jan 24, 2012

Even though I didn't buy this product from budk, I have to say that it's quality is incomparable. It holds up well to use, stays sharp, looks sexy, and is lightweight. Overall, whether you're using it for a survival pack, tomahawk, small breaching tool, room decoration, whatever. It's worth it.
Jan 20, 2012

This product and well done, its weight is very well balanced, sharp and his blade and its tip is infallible. Today I played several times in a tree and nailed all of them that it was a beauty. I cut some branches and also to my surprise I finished the job in no time. Thank Budk!
This is the best axe/tomahawk I have ever owned. I saw this axe on budk one day I got on to look for throwing knives, but instead I saw this on the side of the site. I bought it and 7 days later it showed up. As soon as I got past the box I went to my backyard and started practicing my throwing with it, and then I found a tree to chop down. Need less to say the axe did wonders, within a couple heavy smacks the tree was in my fire place. BEST AXE EVER!! I plan to buy the new M48 with the tan color to it. I think adding yet another AMAZING axe to my collection would make me 10x happy. Thank you BUDK!!
Jan 05, 2012

This thing is awesome, great sticks on both sides its sharp and accurate at a good price. I recommend it 100%.
Jan 03, 2012

I just got my M48 and as soon as I took it out of the box I cut my finger. Out of the box this thing is razor sharp!
Dec 31, 2011

This this is BAD***, just got this yesterday and this Axe is very sexy and just straight up Intimidating. Don't think twice, you gotta buy this axe!!!! You wont regret it.!!!!!!!
Dec 30, 2011

This item was amazing, I've been chopping huge branches and it still has its edge well spent money. Not my first purchase and not my last one either.
Dec 21, 2011

I received the tomahawk two days after it had been ordered. I got it quick, and am very satisfied with the purchase. It didn't come as sharp as I expected, but it doesn't need to be any sharper due to it's sheer power. I'll definitely be buying from True Swords again.
Dec 11, 2011

This axe was sharp enough to shave with right out of the box. Tt flies amazingly and its everything I was hoping it would be, and more. I just wish it had a hard case instead of the cloth nylon, otherwise this is a great buy. I will be taking mine on every tour of duty I ever serve.
Nov 20, 2011

This thing is amazing!! Weighted very well and throws like a champ. The handle seems nearly indestructible. Blade comes very sharp but dulls with use. Other than that it still manages to take massive chunks out of anything! This thing is devastating!
Nov 11, 2011

OK, so I bought the m48 tomahawk a long while ago trust me this axe is a BEAST my only complaint is the grip is really slippery but I had an idea to use some hockey tape and ended up finding this tennis racket grip tape I bought it for like 4 bucks and OMG the grip is amazing makes this already deadly weapon that much more dangerous LOVE this axe.. sleep with it in my bed post next to my head every night..
Nov 05, 2011

First off, this thing looks [email protected] a$$. I ended up using this tool for a little home remodeling project. I had to take out cupboards, some sheet rock, and some plywood. This thing was in-valuable for those tasks. I ended the day of hard work with practice throwing it at an old door :)
Oct 16, 2011

Great tomahawk! I love it doesn't always stick in a tree but takes massive chunks with every swing. Very light and maneuverable. Only drawback is I should've bought 2. Great grip, OK snap on sheath, and a sleek look so go get it.
Oct 14, 2011

You will be amazed with the beauty of this item for it is totally balance and precise to its intentions. This is fully functional item, give it all the punishment you want but can surely stand to anything...throw it, hack it, or use it for chopping big logs or trees, you can surely depend on it. MY OVERALL RATING FOR THIS IS A TOTAL FIVE....GOOD WORK AND DESIGN UNITED CUTLERY....
Oct 05, 2011

I must say it is an excellent tomahawk. Very easy to control when throwing and manuvering. I am waiting for a chinese throwing hatchet to come in the mail. I will test them against eachother to see which one is better.(Accuracy).

I definitely recomend this for any fanatic. A great addition to any collection.

Another kick a** peace to add to my United Cutlery collection. If you are looking for something that wont break and will keeps it sharpness. You can never go wrong with United Cutlery.

I LOVE THIS M48 IT STAYS PRETTY SHARP, AND IT'S VERY STRONG, I KEEP THIS WITH ALL MY OTHER QUALITY CAMPING AND SURVIVAL GEAR AND EQUIPMENT.
Sep 21, 2011

This is one tough Hawk. Beautiful design and handling. Out of box, fifty throws, 47 stuck and it stayed sharp. It has a menacing hardcore look to it that is backed up with what seems to be great construction. At this price, I bought six and plan to buy more for good friends at Christmas.
Sep 18, 2011

The coolest looking tomahawk ever and its affordable. Very impressed with the quality and functionality of a 40$ hawk. I can actually use it and not worry about breaking it. The spike is very fun to use.
Sep 13, 2011

This tomahawk is amazing buy it right now. Its perfect for camping or just throwing it in your back yard. The first thing I did was throw it into a tree in mine and it stuck first shot, but if u plan on doing that make sure u find yourself a tree with not so many knots in it, mine did and it bounced out and stuck in the ground next to the tree. (if your going to throw any thing always be safe and responsible). The head of the axe is as sharp as it needs to be. The spike on the back is insanely sharp and will puncture anything with ease. Buy this it is worth the 40 dollars.
Aug 04, 2011

Amazing. I use it for throwing and it works perfect. (i expected no less) All I've let throw have liked it and are planning on buying some. Very durable handle and mean sharpened blade make a lethal weapon and the spike will stick in nearly anything. The only mistake your making by reading this is not being outside throwing it.

Just got my M48 Hawk, What a beast!!! Love it. Would recommend. Get one.
May 28, 2011

In my 10 years of throwing tomahawks, I've never thrown anything this great. It is very well designed and its durability is out of this world! I would recommend the M48 tactical hawk to anyone who enjoys the art of throwing, beginner or professional. Thank you BudK!!
May 28, 2011

This axe is absolutely phenomenal. The quality and durability of united cutlery products are top notch and this axe is no different. It has great hacking power and is actually a relatively decent thrower. The only complaint I would have for this is that I wish the edges were sharper (especially on the pick axe side), but otherwise I would say that this is an incredible buy, and I would strongly suggest buying it if you are looking for a durable as well as versatile weapon. Thank you budk for the great product and my extreme satisfaction.
May 26, 2011

This thing oozes toughness. How can anyone not like this thing? C'mon. This is one mean looking, tough, durable, sharp tool/weapon.You could do alot with this if it were your only survival tool you had along
May 13, 2011

this is a fabulous product...I tested it on a variety of subjects, starting with some plant matter...a branch, and a yucca root...both were cut easily...then a soft foam wrapped in cardboard...and finally a piece of pork...all were cut and pierced with ease...then I tested the spike on an old, dead car stereo...and no damage occurred to the hawk...I am officially buying a second! perfect defense or camp axe...the spike is not sharpened along the edges, due to it's stabbing design...wonderful design
May 10, 2011

This thing is awesome. I sharpened the top of the spike because its pretty blunt, now it really kicks a$$! If your thinking of buying it...just do it, no regrets.
May 01, 2011

I am very impressed when i first pulled this hawk out of the box. As the pictures showed the spike looked sharp and thin and this worried me. However the spike had perfect thickness and had a slightly keen edge. Sharp edges on the spike make less versatile and durable as the spike is meant for impalement not slicing. Hawk is perfectly balanced and will make a great addition under my store counter next to my buddy Colt
Apr 19, 2011

Well worth the money. Very happy with this purchase. Great quality, nice and sharp on both ends. Just a great product.
Apr 12, 2011

very light, sharp on corners (already had to bandage my finger from a slip up on my behalf, slightly dull (possibly due to state law) easy to use
Mar 29, 2011

This tomahawk is awesome! The head is finely crafted and solid as a rock. I swung this at a cardboard box a couple of time, and I have to say, the heft of the axe mid-swing is very familiar and just feels right. If you want to sharpen it you can (I did), but for the traditional purposes of an axe such as this, its practically "plug and play" if you catch my meaning. Excellent buy!
Feb 23, 2011

ima say this now, the head of this is smaller then ud ever think. but thats just wonderful for the wieght and throwing capabilities of this death machine!

the handle is amazingly strong and blade durable. the spike is NOT sharp but pointy so it can do some impact blows niicee!

very pleased with trueswords on this well made throwing axe
Feb 19, 2011

Aggressive and Impressive. Sharp, versatile balanced, and durable. Awesome buy, thank you Bud K and United Cutlery.
Feb 02, 2011

Awesome. The picture does not do it justice. Good weight, and built solid. Liked the hawk so much I ordered the M48 Survivor & Dagger, which I got today & they deserve 5 stars as well. Thanks Bud K for the products, price & fast shipping.

Jan 26, 2011

just got the m48 hawk, when i open the box there was only one thing i could say, and that was, bad***! this tactical hawk out does anything i seen on the market, best design, best balance, best handling. if your looking for hawk for self defense this is the one. you don't want to be on the receiving of this hawk! Editor's Note: Thank you for your comments. We have updated the review to reflect the appropriate materials.
Jan 24, 2011

This hawk is Awesome, well worth the 35 bucks. Well made and very cool looking. It has a four inch cutting edge and a very pointy spike. I wouldn't take it camping because of its aus6 steel, but for combat or display along with the low price it gets five stars.
Jan 22, 2011

Solid piece! Well designed and lightweight. Serves many different purposes from camping to yard work and personal defense. Definitely worth its weight on my bug out bag!
Jan 20, 2011

the hawk is a great buy. It's impressively sharp out of the box as well. In my opinion, this axe is a great buy worth every penny.
Jan 20, 2011

I was surprised at how beefy this hawk is! It looks thinner and sharper in the photo, but to my very pleasant surprise, it's nice and thick. The spike point is way better than I thought it would be, as it appeared very thin, sharp and maybe brittle in the picture. The spike is just about right in the girth department. Nice weight to the head to help deliver the necessary energy to get the job done. THIS ONE goes in my patrol bag for sure.
Nov 27, 2013

I like this ax a lot. As soon as I got it I started throwing it and stuck it 10 out 10 times. Well balance and easy to use. The only problem that I had was I broke it on my second day. The ad said the handle is nearly indestruckable, I snap it off right below the tang with no problem. BUDK replaced it with no problem.
May 12, 2013

Great tomahawk, comes sharp and well made. Mine did brake because of a whole lot of throwing (it throws great). I think if you dont throw the crap out of it, it will stay strong.
Feb 06, 2013

There are numerous options for combat axes out there, but of those generally available on the market, I believe this is the best designed. The size, shape, and heft of the axe blade as well as the overall balance is superb - probably one of the best ever developed. The spike is well-shaped with just the right amount of curve. However, I am NOT a fan of this "bolted on" shaft design (regrettably, most of the current crop of axes use that same design, so this piece does not suffer over much, at least in comparison) - the old Viet Nam combat axe, made from a single piece of steel (head and shaft together), was a superior design, even if the head was not as well shaped as this one's. Additionally, I had read reviews extolling the sharpness of the axe right out of the box. In truth, the one I got was too dull to cut butter and required considerable effort to put an edge on it. Additionally, the spike didn't even have a pretense of an edge and it had to be ground and polished considerably, along the top curve, just to create an edge (I left the lower edge of the spike blunted and squared to aid leverage when using the spike as a breeching tool). Aside from those complaints, I like the axe and consider it by far the best of the available, commercial options, particularly for the price. I would not trust it to use as a utility axe, but as a combat axe, I think it would do extremely well, tho' a full length metal tang would be preferable.
Dec 30, 2012

Got the M48 Tomahawk for Christmas and i love it. I have practiced throwing it and I am not to pleased. It's heavy which is good for fighting close quarters, but at a distance you are at a disadvantage. Over all very good tool.
Dec 30, 2012

Great product & great price. This multi-purpose tomahawk feels really solid with a good balance, the weight is good too. I gave it a 4 out of 5 because I would like a tomahawk made out of carbon steel. It comes sharp but it could use a touch up. This tomahawk is perfect for survival, camping, warfare, wood chopping, also be careful this is NOT a toy. It is a dangerous weapon!!
Dec 27, 2012

I got this axe summer of 2012. It was my favorite thing I have ordered off Budk, until I threw it today. DO NOT THROW THIS AXE. The video Budk has on their website makes it look good for throwing, it's really not. Mine snapped in half where the three screws going down the handle end. I am hoping with some strong glue and tape, I will make this axe good enough to use, not throw. (And carefully use at that). I am very disappointed that my favorite item broke. Be very careful with this axe if you get it, I don't want this to happen to anyone else.
Nov 11, 2012

This tomahawk is one of the most affective tools i have ever used. You can cut down trees with is like butter. The thing is good for trowing, very accurate and sicks almost everytime....as far as durability i dont know ive had to replace 3 most likly from trowing it.... still is a bada** weapon..
Oct 24, 2012

A very effective and dangerous tool. The m48 is something I would take with me in any type of survival situation. This tomahawk should NOT be over looked. If you want the most bang for your buck, you should get this tomahawk. Right out of the box this thing is extremly sharp. I nearly sliced my hand open earlier and all it did was slip out of the sheath. Imagine what it could do if you swing it!!
May 10, 2012

I bought this thing a couple months ago, and haven't thrown it yet, as I live in an apartment complex. It looks to be very strong though, however having read some of the lesser reviews I do have my concerns. It does not seem that sharp when you take it out. But if you think about it, you dont want an axe blade to be finely sharp, because, if you use it to chop anything, the blade could chip. This blade has sufficient thickness to prevent that, and I made the same mistake of thinking it was not sharp at all, ran my finger on it, and got a very fine paper cut in less then an inch. I give it four stars till I can actually throw it.
Apr 01, 2012

My tactical squadron loved this when I got it! The head itself performed beautifully. I was even able to pierce a bullet-proof military helmet with the spiked end. 4/5 because the thing finally broke. Be careful not to continue throwing it with all your might or you might end up with a useless axe head. I'm ready to get a second one though. Good job United Cutlery!
Mar 15, 2012

I put this tool through some paces, and over all, I like it. It has sufficient heft and balance as to provide adequate penetration on many materials, but not so much so as to create difficulty in extraction. Admittedly, I haven't tried throwing it - I've read some complaints about the handles breaking when thrown - because I think there are very limited applications where throwing the tool would be useful. I was disappointed in the smooth handle construction. It is disturbingly bereft of any substantial grip texture. Should your hand get sweaty, or if the handle becomes fouled by Zombie juices, it could easily slip out of the hand. I found a quick application of Hockey Stick Tape yielded an exponential improvement in this issue. I also dislike the scabbard. Seems flimsy and I'd prefer a MOLLE attachment.
Jan 13, 2012

Built well, the head is a bit too small in my opinion, but it will still do all the damage you need. I wish the handle was wrapped or something rather than being just metal. Might make it easier to hold. Great tomahawk though, yet to try throwing it, but even if it isn't great for throwing it is awesome for anything else you could think of!

Nov 04, 2011

Ax kicks, but the sheath is dangerous. It allows the beard or front part of the ax to twist and hang out like a 1/4 or 1/8 of an inch. Now that don't sound bad but look at that beard and its as sharp as it looks. I had it mounted to a belt on left side and cut my thumb twice in the same night. The sheath needs work, but the axe is killer.
Nov 01, 2011

Received this nice tomahawk just yesterday and when I opened it up, it had a very nice handle to fit my hand. Wanted to test it out but it was haha like 12:30 at night. So then just later that day...I tried it and uh...well...every d**n time I threw the thing...the spike would keep ending up into my target. I think I just need some more time on how to throw it correctly for the blade to sink into my target But other than that....I do love it. The sheath too on the other hand, isn't too great....I'd recommend making some kind of "quick release" type of deal if you're into the outdoors and whatnot. The quality of the tomahawk is exquisite...I do love how it looks and feels in the fitting on my hand. I would've gave this lovely little tool a 5 star rating except for the sheath..all in all, that's it...if you're looking into some type of a fun, compact, self-defense tool...you got it right here. The m48 delivers what ya need.
Apr 05, 2011

This is one sweet tomahawk. Beautiful and sharp right out of the box. Too bad on my second use with it the handle cracked right below where the metal from the head ends inside the handle. Still have not received any word on if I can just purchase a new handle, or get a refund, or anything. Its been 2 weeks and still no word. I actually give the hawk 4 stars and sadly 1 star for the BudK customer service people.
Jan 21, 2011

I got this today and it's quite nice. A sturdy, well made version of the famous Roger's Rangers hawks. I did dress the bit edge a little but not much - I just like them sharper than most do. The weight and balance are great - but that's why we buy tomahawks, isn't it? Be aware that the spike is not "sharpened on both edges" at all. It is ground on both edges, but both the top and bottom of the spike have flat edges over 1/32 of an inch wide. As I'm not planning any close combat fighting with it, that's not an issue to me - but if it is to you, be prepared to put this hawk on the grinder for a while, and to finish dressing up the edge after. (For my purposes the spike was what was important.) The sheath opens at the bottom - I don't really like that, but it doesn't mean anything negative about the product. (Design maybe, but not the product.) I'll be making a replacement sheath more to my liking.
Jan 19, 2011

The M48 is just a thing of visceral/primal beauty out of the box, Great heft on the head and the fiberglass shaft feels great in your grasp, the shaft wasn't too blunt and stubby like ones from others. I hacked on some 2 3/4 branches and it did the job but not as good as a Swedish Axe, but for a tomahawk, I was merely christening it. I also had the cheap hatchet, the one on this site for 8.99 and used it on the cut down branches and it busted the handle in two! The only complaint is that I feel it could have come a little more sharper to match it's visual aesthetic. But aside from that easily curable symptom, It has more quality features than alot of the so called "Tomahawks" featured on this site. It seems that United Cutlery is the only way to go with edged weapons. This should be in every tomahawker's fist. This is the only PRACTICAL tomahawk that I have found worth mentioning.
Aug 10, 2014

The sheath is garbage. I got more injuries from the sheath letting the tomahawk go than I did from use of the tomahawk. I spent the money to get a kydex sheath made. It's too light for normal axe work. I know from working with a fire department for a few years. This tomahawk is too light for doing chopping or breaching that would be expected from a fire axe. It can still chop and breach but don't expect speedy results. It's definitely a combat weapon through and through. It lacks in rescue capabilities. I can't couple this with a pry bar like my other axes and have an effective breaching system.
Mar 06, 2014

I want a nice tomahawk, decent throwing and ruggedness. This one did its job well, i got to the point were id split cards almost everytime, but the handle is a little weak. I know you shouldnt throw em to hard but when it comes to sticking it into a harder target you gotta have a little force. One of the best ones ive owned but the handle is a tad bit weak so be carefull
Sep 18, 2013

This was an ok tomahawk, perfect weight, great design, and sharp out of the box. At first, I loved it, I practiced with it every day and got really good at throwing it. After about 7 months, I threw it at a tree and it broke at the handle. As I said, I loved the tomahawk, so I bought a new one. No more than a week later, it broke in the exact same spot. All in all, good tomahawk, but not very durable.
Nov 13, 2012

Its a sturdy design and POINTY but sharp is what it is not. Im really glad I ordered two sharpeners with it because this blade is dull. It barely cut the cardboard it came in.
Apr 19, 2012

I bought this M48 Tomahawk back in April of 2011 so I have had it for a year now... I have yet to break the handle but after reading a years worth of reviews I see that it does happen, and can easily see how. When I bought mine the first adds were claiming that the blade was made of "Forged" steel but that was clearly a typo as now the adds clearly and accurately state that it is "Cast". The sheath is garbage and some of the securing snaps have pulled through the cheap nylon. For the $35.00 I guess its worth it but would not buy again.
Mar 25, 2012

A very nice hawk. Throws nicely and is weighted so that it sticks about 80% of the time. Only problem is my (INDESTRUCTIBLE) handle snapped right off of the head. The head was lodged in the target it hit and the handle went flying. Overall nice hawk, but if you are serious about this weapon and you are trusting it with your life, don't buy this weapon, it WILL fail you in your time of need.
Sep 09, 2015

I've had my tomahawk for a long time. I've only recently started using it however. After about an hour total of practice, the handle snapped just under the third bolt. The axe is awesome, but it was a 40$ bust in the end. The inner metal appeared to have a knot where it snapped. I'm pretty disappointed I must say.
Oct 16, 2013

I got the tomahawk bout 2 weeks now. I haven't left the woods yet. It's a very sturdy tomahawk. Ive put it through all sort of things. I gave it 4 stars cuss it didnt come razor sharp but bout 20 mins I got it sharp. Its great now! Im about to order 1 for my buddy, cuss we had so much fun with it.now if u read this DONT tell my wife that im in the woods.
Aug 23, 2013

OK, when I first saw this thing in the catalog I was determined to get it, a couple of weeks later I found myself ripping open it's box. What you see is (almost) what you get. The spike is NOT sharp, it's as if someone hacksawed the first couple of millimeters off. I threw it at a tree and it ricocheted horizontally and hit me square on the leg with the spike. I fully expected blood to stream out like a water faucet. THE SPIKE IS SO DULL THAT IT BRUISED MY LEG MORE THAN IT CUT! The blade is not very sharp but it'll do for an axe. In the catalog it says "great for throwing" however it rarely sticks with the blade towards the target. When thrown with the spike towards the target it sticks better. If you are going to chop with this, wear gloves or you'll get a blister within a few minutes. I used it to chop down a small, soft wood tree. My machete did a better job. If I could go back to before I ordered it I would order a SOG fasthawk instead. You can get two fasthawks for almost the same price. Just my two cents, but if you want this hawk get it. But there are better hawks out there.
Feb 04, 2012

Okay first of all this thing can really back up its name but there is some things that are not the best. I just broke my second one ten minutes ago and NO it was not a dead tree but I was still throwing it and not hard so overall they could make some improvements to the middle core. You can tell that some fibers were not carefully combined and that is not safe.
Jan 19, 2012

Bought this in October of 2011 for my son's birthday. He's a beginner at throwing so he certainly missed sticking it often, but for a "Virtually Indestructible" product I wouldn't think that the handle would break so quickly. It broke at the first bolt where the metal blade is inserted into the nylon handle. Guess I should have bought a cheaper one for a beginner.
Sep 01, 2011

Very wicked looking. Unfortunately after I threw it a few times it broke at the handle. Too bad. I liked it a lot.
Aug 26, 2015

Me and my son was throwing it and the handle broke just under the third bolt!the head of the hawk is the best. But the handle is a shame.I was planning on getting the hole line of M48 but i seen they all have the same handle .Dont want to wast my money
Jun 01, 2015

i had this for about 2 months with little use, i loved it, it was awesome looking and it felt great, until me and my brother were throwing it at my dead tree and it snapped clean right under the third bolt. the metal part of the hawk is great, but the handle is just awful. its ok, but if you buy one of these you have been warned.
Feb 17, 2015

...until the handle snaps off after about twenty or thirty throws. Head sank right into a section of tree trunk, but the handle snapped clean off right below the bolsters on the sides of the head. This would be decent as a camp axe until the head busts off, but tomahawks are meant for throwing, not chopping wood. Would not recommend. Looks great on the wall or a shelf, but buy a one-piece steel solution like the Kit Rae axe for repetitive use, they don't break.
Jul 13, 2014

There is no replacement handle available for this thrower. When you break the handle, not if, you now own a paperweight.
Jun 09, 2014

Looks and feels nice. But looks as they say are deceiving. Handle doesn't take abuse broke after 3 days cheap junk. Very disappointed.
Jan 30, 2014

I am giving this one star because it looks and feels cool. I got it this past Christmas. I threw it three times at a rotten wood block (It isn't like I was throwing it at something hard!) and it broke right at the connection between the head and the handle. Two years earlier I got a cheap tomahawk for half the price and it has outlasted the M48 by 3 YEARS!!! I am VERY displeased with it! save your money for a fast hawk.
Jan 18, 2014

Well I looked into this axe forever to be let down after 50throws and im not a huge guy average size, I threw it at a stump and it just snapped! I was so disappointed told all my friends hey this thing is awesome its indestructible and it just embarrassed me. so with that if you get an actual good one be carful because if you toss it too hard it might break sorry to burst your bubble but I don't want the same thing happen to another so purchase with caution.
Jan 02, 2014

Bought two, they both snapped just south if the mounting tang within the first 100 throws. 80 bucks in the crapper. 'Nuff said.
Dec 26, 2011

I had one of these and as far as I am concerned it was not worth the box it came in.....the first time I used it it was fun and the second time I threw it the handle broke off right where the tang stops and the plastic handle begins.....I'm not new with a hawk and have a great collection of arms and armor. I consider saying a weapon in indestructible means u cant break when its brand new....I'm not Chuck Norris so I don't think I threw it so hard I broke the sound barrier so its not like it was users err.
Dec 07, 2011

The m48 is a nice looking tomahawk BUT, is cheaply made... Anyone planing to use this as an actual tool should shy away from this product. Within 2 hrs of abuse I broke the spike clean off. "it's still in the tree I threw this hawk at" and blew apart the handle chopping into a 4-5" branch of dead wood (maple). Simply put, it's a great item for looking at and that's about it.
